Book the hotel that looks like it has come straight from a postcard, first. 71 Nyhavn Hotel fills two converted warehouses at the quiet end of the canal. The timber beams are still there, and the harbour ferries stop right outside. A few minutes down the quay on Havnegade, Copenhagen Strand is another converted warehouse. From here you can do the obvious things without shame such as; taking the bridge across to the street food at Broens and going on an evening stroll back once the tour groups have gone, or trying a short run in the morning before Copenhagen wakes up.
Five minutes north, the streets are quieter. Phoenix Copenhagen is on Bredgade, close enough to Amalienborg where you can catch the changing of the guard. The Marble Church and Designmuseum Danmark will fill the rest of the day, given there’s so much to explore! At Rosenborg, the crown jewels sit in the castle basement, and the King's Garden around it is free and full of Copenhageners pretending to work. Wakeup, Borgergade, a budget design hotel by architect Kim Utzon, is around the corner from the garden gates at a fraction of the neighbourhood's rates.
For the last night in town, aim for Tivoli. The Square looks straight onto the Town Hall Square. Imperial Hotel is right beside Vesterport station, while Steel House Copenhagen is a design hostel with a swimming pool in the basement. Wakeup, Bernstorffsgade and the Tivoli Hotel are both a short walk from the gardens, and there's a third Wakeup on Carsten Niebuhrs Gade if those are all booked out. You can spend the evening on the rides and then cross into Vesterbro for a night out in the Meatpacking District.
Save the coast for the last day. Copenhagen Island stands on its own in the harbour, with the Islands Brygge harbour bath just across the water - swimmers are in it well into autumn, so don’t be too shy. After this, take the coastal train to Klampenborg, where Dyrehaven's deer park, Bakken (open since 1583 and by most counts the world's oldest amusement park) and Bellevue Beach share the same stop. If you'd rather end the trip out in the green, Gentofte Hotel is a former coaching inn on Gentoftegade, which is of course Valpas certified…( like everything else on this route)
